The Rev. David Huxley Scholarship for Bi-Vocational Clergy

In 2017, the graduating class of the 2017–2018 diocesan School of Ordained Ministry (SOM) created a fund to honor the Rev. David Huxley. Fr. Dave served as rector of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Midland and as a mentor to SOM students. He was also active in numerous diocesan initiatives, participated in ecumenical ministerial alliances, and worked with community service organizations, including the Salvation Army. Fr. Dave died in January 2026.

When the scholarship was established, the class wrote:

“As students, we have been blessed by his patience, quiet humor, and love of each of us. We would like to show our appreciation for Fr. Dave's contribution to our lives and future ministries by creating and providing preliminary funding for a scholarship in his honor. We ask you to prayerfully consider joining us in contributing funds to support individuals in our diocese who feel called to ordained ministry but face financial obstacles which could prevent them from receiving the further education and formation they need to act on that call.”

We are deeply grateful for all the donations that have been made to the scholarship fund. For the past eight years, this fund has blessed a number of students by helping cover the costs of tuition, books, and travel required to attend our school once a month for three years.

The School of Ordained Ministry in the Diocese of Northwest Texas exists to provide a quality theological education and formation for those called to serve as priests and deacons. SOM focuses on educating talented students who, for various reasons, are unable to attend a residential seminary.

The SOM curriculum is based on the Iona School for Ministry in the Diocese of Texas. This three-year formational program includes academic study of the Bible, Church History, and Theology/Christian Ethics. Students also participate in practical courses covering Spirituality, Liturgy and Music, the Theory and Practice of Ministry, and Social Justice.

Throughout the program, students learn about the order to which they feel called and work with members of that order to discern and shape their future ordained ministry. This combination of theological education, spiritual formation, and practical ministry preparation equips students to serve God and the Church while continuing to live and work in their local communities.
