October 2023 Youth News

2023 was the 10th year of our diocesan summer camps, Camp Quarterman to be held on the road.  Although one year was virtual—we have had approximately—190 campfires with s’mores (3000 plus marshmallows, but who is counting?) and many many rounds of Pharaoh Pharaoh sung, 190 games of human clue, counselor hunt and capture the flag. Ten faithful clergy, some who have joined us for one year and those who come every year. We have had college students and teachers, office and factory workers and retired folks serve as counselors, nurses, craft leaders and support staff. 

Countless compline services, daily devotions, healing services and Eucharist have been held in the dining halls, gathering rooms and outside under the trees. And about 500 campers have showed up for a week of getting to be who God created them to be without judgement, have fun and just be a kid.  

Our diocese has given scholarships so many can attend camp. Scholarships come from donations small and large from ECW groups, from churches, from youth doing fundraisers, and memorials to members. Campers have attended from all over Texas, from Oklahoma and two from Arizona. During the virtual camp we had campers even join us from Michigan and Florida.  

Our camps do make a difference to our youth and they in turn share what they have learned and experienced when they leave and head home. And one way we know that is our camp alumni want to come back and work at camp and they send their kids to share those experiences and make memories.

There is a song that we love to sing at camp, that has a line in it, “God’s going to move this place…God’s going to turn this whole world, upside down!” God is working in ways we have no idea!
